A Colorful Christmas Tree for my Kiddo!
I know I’ve been terrible about updating this blog. Time to myself is a rare thing these days, between work, homeschooling my daughter, and life in general. I’m promise I’m going to do better! If you’ve joined me from the fabulous blog of Kate Decorates, welcome! Thanks for stopping by!
Today I’m excited to share with you a space I’ve created just for my daughter for Christmas. My daughter LOVES doing crafts of all kinds, and her new passion is making ornaments. I quickly realized that her ornaments were going to take over our family tree, so I decided to get a special tree just for her this year. 2020 has been insane, so if it brings her some extra Christmas cheer, I’m going to call it a win!
I bought a smaller tree from Michaels with a coupon and some rewards points I had. My daughter is all about rainbows, and so I figured I could take a basic tree and make it special with some extra creativity. Here are some of the finds I used to put my own twist on it!
The tree was pre-lit with white lights, but I chose to add some colorful gumdrop lights to give it some extra dimension. I wove in some fun pom pom garland, and I found the most adorable pom pom tree topper at Paper Source! I added a few pre-made ornaments from Target and Kailo Chic that my daughter picked out online. She had a few special ornaments from previous years, but the majority of the ornaments were made by me and my daughter!
There are so many things you can do with Clear Plastic Ornaments! Some we filled with brightly colored pom poms. My daughter loved stuffing them inside and choosing the colors. For others, we filled them with craft paint and then swirled the paint around by slowly turning the ornaments. Then we turned them upside down on top of Dixie Cups to let the excess paint drain out. We also used cheap hairspray and glitter to make the glittery ornaments. The hairspray makes the glitter stick to the sides! Also, for this activity, a funnel is your friend, or glitter will be everywhere. Who am I kidding? There was still glitter everywhere. #honesty.
The candy cane and wreath ornaments were made by simply stringing beads on pipe cleaners. My daughter loved making her rainbows and other patterns, and it was a great fine motor activity so I’m counting it as school. Ha!
We also used a lot of ornament kits and Target Dollar Spot items I’ve been saving up for a while. I’m telling you the child is obsessed.
I’m very proud of my tree skirt, because it was SO easy to customize something store bought and make it my own. I purchased this Pom Pom Tree Skirt from Target, and realized that I could make a rainbow with the existing pom poms by adding more colors of pom poms in between them. I made 6 of each color, using these steps from a previous blog post. I then sewed them on the skirt with a large yarn needle and added a dab of hot glue to the knot to make it secure on the underside. Lots of yarn and a bit of time, but totally worth it!
I’ve really adored this special time with my daughter despite all of the craziness in the world right now. Our lives are not perfect, and we face challenges like any other family. We have been blessed in SO many ways, but this year has also been filled with a lot of heartache. Crafting and happy colors bring me joy, and so in our home I’m trying to make the best of it! Curbside delivery and online orders are my lifesaver at the moment, and I’m so grateful to the countless workers across all businesses that are allowing me to continue to do things like this.
I hope some of these ideas inspire you to spend some time making things as a family! This cozy little corner is full of happiness and joy. I’ve got one EXCITED little elf.
